AN INTRODUCTION TO SHAKUR
I live in Makota village with my parents, Kifuko Oliva
and Kaima Meddy, and my younger sister. I am the
firstborn of two children. We live in a modest one
bedroom house with a single living room.
I help at home by washing dishes, collecting water from
the borehole, working in the garden, and cleaning our
home and compound. My parents are peasant farmers
who grow crops such as corn, pinto beans, and cassava,
mainly for our family’s food. When work is available, they
also earn a small income as casual laborers in other
people’s gardens. After about three days of hard work,
each parent earns approximately $2.90.
Because our income is low and irregular, meeting basic
needs such as education, healthcare, and household
expenses is often difficult. Despite these challenges, I am
hardworking, disciplined, and determined. I value
education because I believe it can help me achieve my
goals, support my family, and build a better future if I
am given the opportunity.
