Hearts & Hope
My Home Life:
I am the second-born in a family of two children, and I have one sibling, a boy. We both live with our maternal grandmother, Nantongo Jamawa. At home, I help by cooking, doing laundry, working in the garden, cleaning the house and compound, washing dishes, and collecting firewood for cooking as well as water from the borehole.
My parents separated, and my mother sent me to live with my grandmother. My father’s whereabouts are unknown, and my mother left our village in search of work. She occasionally sends some financial support from the casual work she does, but it is barely enough to meet our basic needs.
My grandmother is a peasant farmer who grows food crops such as maize (corn), groundnuts, sweet potatoes, pinto beans, and cassava, mainly for home consumption. For example, she can harvest about 100 kilograms of maize in a season. She also makes samosas and sells them at Kiboyo Lutheran School. She started this business with a capital of UGX 15,000 ($4.29) and earns a profit of about UGX 7,000 ($2) after three days of hard work.
