Hearts & Hope
My Home Life: I am the fourth-born in my family and live in a house with two bedrooms and one living room. I stay with my paternal aunt, Nakago Nasirah, along with my four siblings (three boys and one girl) and my aunt’s children.
At home, I help with various chores such as collecting water from the well, washing utensils, collecting firewood, cooking, doing laundry, and cleaning the house.
My parents separated, and my mother’s whereabouts are unknown. My father used to work in construction as a casual laborer, but he fell off a building and broke his thigh. Unfortunately, he never received proper treatment and has been disabled for several years now.
My aunt works as a waitress at a small local restaurant in a nearby town, earning just 3,000 shillings (about $0.86) per day. Sometimes, kind people in our village lend us small plots of land for a season, where we grow food crops like cassava, maize (corn), sweet potatoes, and pinto beans—mainly for home consumption.
