Hearts & Hope
My Home Life: I am the first-born in my family and live with my two half-sisters (all girls), three other grandchildren, and our maternal grandmother, Namukasa Florence.
At home, I help with chores such as collecting firewood, fetching water from the well, washing dishes, and keeping our house and compound clean.
My father passed away when I was five years old, and my mother later abandoned us after remarrying. She no longer provides any financial support. Our grandmother takes care of us. She is a peasant farmer who grows crops like pinto beans and maize (corn), both for home consumption and for sale in our small garden.
For example, after four months of cultivation, she might harvest 60 kilograms of beans and sell 40 kilograms for just 20,000 shillings (about $5.71). However, this small income is not enough to meet all our basic needs or pay for school fees.
