8,000 Miles Away, Two Lives Rewritten
Theresa's Story: A Mutual Transformation
When someone signs up to sponsor a child, the focus is almost always on the impact downstream: a child receiving school fees, daily meals, medical care, and a safe community. What rarely gets mentioned in the sponsorship brochure is the quiet transformation on the other end of that commitment.
Sponsorship is not a charity transaction; it is a relationship that permanently alters two lives at once.
Few stories capture that truth quite like Theresa’s.
At our recent Party with a Purpose, Theresa said "yes" to sponsoring her fourth student through Hearts and Hope - a sweet baby girl named Kareen. But Theresa’s journey didn’t start with child number four. It began years ago with a single step of faith that took her all the way across the globe.
From a "Golden Ticket" to a Dirt-Floor Church
In 2022, Theresa won the Golden Ticket drawing at Party with a Purpose. Given the chance to travel, her answer was immediate: she didn't want a vacation resort. The only place she wanted to go was Uganda to finally look into the eyes of the three children her family was already sponsoring.
By February 2023, Theresa stepped onto Ugandan soil for the very first time. During that trip, the team visited the community of Kiboyo.
"All they had was a small church with dirt floors," Theresa remembers. "And they were praying that Hearts and Hope would choose their village."
That trip became a turning point not just for Kiboyo, but for Theresa. On Valentine’s Day 2023, while sitting at dinner in Uganda, our team received the incredible news: funding was secured, and Kiboyo would officially get a brand-new primary school.
Theresa didn't just hear about the miracle; she walked alongside it.

Saying "Yes" to Kareen
When she attended this year’s Party with a Purpose, her decision was already made. Child sponsorship isn't an abstract concept to Theresa; it has faces, names, and laughter attached to it.
While perusing the available students, Theresa’s heart was drawn to a baby girl she may have held on her very first visit back in 2023.
"Kiboyo has held a special place in my heart ever since my first visit," Theresa wrote to us. "God has been so good to us, and now we can show this sweet baby girl that someone 8,000 miles away loves her and said YES, we will be her sponsors. And look at her cute face - Kareen, I cannot wait to give you a big hug in 2027."
Then she added a line that sums up just how deep this bond goes:
"Plus, I have room to add a few more initials to my tattoo."
The Two-Way Transformation
When Theresa decided to sponsor her first child, she thought she was helping a child in need. She didn’t know she would watch a community rise out of dirt floors. She didn’t know she would stand in Ugandan dust, marching in parades, weeping tears of joy alongside mothers and fathers half a world away. She didn’t know those children’s initials would end up permanently inked onto her skin.
That is the power of sponsorship.
It anchors you to something bigger than yourself. It breaks down geographical borders and cultural divides, reminding us that family is bound by love, not just blood. When you tell a child across the world, "You are seen, you are valued, and you have a future," your own perspective on gratitude and community changes forever.
To Theresa: thank you for saying "yes" four times over, for traveling the distance, and for showing Kareen that love knows no borders.
To anyone standing on the edge of making that same decision: know that the life you change won’t just be the child’s. It might just be your own.
